10 Steps to Success in Writing a Christian Book<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

STEP #1 \/ Determine It Is the Will of God<\/h5>

The most important step is receiving a revelation from God that it is definitely His will for you to write the book. There is a dramatic difference between doing a \"good thing\" and doing a \"God-thing\" in your walk with God.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

STEP #2 \/ Choose Possible Titles & Subtitles<\/h5>

Decide on a title and a subtitle that perfectly describe the substance of the message you want your book to convey. It's always good to list several options and prayerfully consider which one is best.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

STEP #3 \/ Predetermine Your Primary Goals<\/h5>

Determine what you want the outcome to be, the final idea or ideas that will be enshrined in a convincing, edifying and transformational way once someone finishes reading your book.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

STEP #4 \/ Make a Basic Outline<\/h5>

Write a basic outline that predetermines, step-by-step, how you will build your case and present your concept convincingly as you lead readers to this grand conclusion. This outline should include projected chapter titles.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

STEP #5 \/ Write Chapter Summaries<\/h5>

Write a summary of the content you expect to cover in each chapter. These only need to be four to six sentences long, just a short paragraph explaining what you hope to accomplish in each chapter.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

STEP #6 \/ Set Approximate Chapter Length<\/h5>

Decide approximately what length you want your chapters to be and be ready to stick with it as much as possible (for instance, in my book titled WHO AM I?, I limited myself to about 1,000 to 1,200 words per chapter). By doing this, your book will be more professional and digestible, being 'symmetrical' and 'balanced.'<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

STEP #7 \/ Gather Material<\/h5>

Do thorough research on your subject. It is a good thing to gather material from many Bible dictionaries, concordances, commentaries, various trusted Bible versions (including the original Hebrew and Greek), and other books written on the subject---then categorize all your information in separate folders on your computer. Look up every scripture that uses your key words, and highlight the important ones you want to use. Be sure to list all related words (like redeem, redeemed, redeeming, redemption and Redeemer). This might take several months or longer, depending on your projected goals.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

STEP #8 \/ Decide on Helpful Illustrations to Use<\/h5>

Research and pick out interesting stories in advance that illustrate your key concepts. You can use personal events, dreams, stories from other people's lives, historical events, interesting facts, etc.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

STEP #9 \/ File Unuseful Excess (Don't Delete It)<\/h5>

Once you have compiled a 'mountain' of material, cull away what you decide NOT to use. (Keep it in a separate file or on a separate document on your computer in case you change your mind later on include some of this extra information.) This step is one of the most challenging. They say a miner can go through a ton of coal before finding one diamond. In like manner, you will probably dig through a lot of good but unnecessary material to get to those most valuable truths you need to include.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

STEP #10 \/ Set Standards<\/h5>

Set all your spelling, capitalization and punctuation standards so that you are consistent throughout your book (like the decision whether to capitalize all personal pronouns referring to God except who and whom, or what abbreviations to use for Bible books). A book can be a real mess for an editor to deal with if you skip this crucial step. It would be good to purchase a reference book like \"The Chicago Manual of Style\" or \"The Christian Writer's Manual of Style\" before setting your standards in place.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Concluding Thoughts<\/h5>

After you've done all these things, prayerfully rethink your whole project altogether. Quite often the Holy Spirit will give you even better ways of organizing or presenting your concept. You can go from a small, black-and-white picture to a full color, panoramic display, just by 're-thinking' your book with the Holy Spirit\u2019s help. Remember, the word \"inspiration\" means to breathe into, and the Holy Spirit is the breath of God. He will breathe the life of God into what you write. When that happens, it is so powerful. By the way, God understands the power of an inspired book; He has one Himself. It\u2019s called the Bible.<\/p>\n

Finally, one of my favorite quotes is from Mark Van Doren. He urged students to \"Bring ideas in and entertain them royally, for one of them may be the king.\u201d I\u2019d like to alter it slightly and instead say, \"One of them may be FROM the KING and exalt you to honor.\" I pray that happens for you.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Copyediting<\/h3>\n

This level of editing checks for spelling errors, punctuation errors, grammatical errors, inconsistences in spelling, punctuation, layout and style. The manuscripts of advanced writers usually only require copyediting.

Consistency is a very important thing to give your book a far more professional look. That\u2019s why you need to set capitalization standards, spelling standards, layout standards, sentence structure standards, etc., at the beginning of your book-writing journey. That way your copyeditor will have less to do. Yay!!!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Substantive editing<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This level of editing is also called Line editing. It is more intense grammatically, and is focused on shaping the structure and content of your book. Chapter titles, chapter divisions, paragraph breaks, subheadings, logical sequencing of ideas, sentence structure, effectiveness in communication, development of highlighted concepts, balance, consistency in writing, spelling and punctuation\u2014all of these and more are a part of what a substantive editor seeks to accomplish. First-time authors may require this level.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Creative editing<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This level requires is also called Comprehensive editing. This is what a Book Mentor does. It is a more transformational involvement in a manuscript.\u00a0 It may involve things like: setting goals, development of content, identifying chapter themes and sub-headings. If English is not the first language of the author, and the book is in English, creative editing is usually needed. Transcribed messages require a creative editor. Very few books require this depth of involvement.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Final Proofreading<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Before your book goes to the printer, your editor will perform a final, quick, proofreading overview to make sure everything is right and your book is ready to become a reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

1.<\/strong> Before sending your manuscript<\/strong><\/span>\u2014Before your Project Manager sends your manuscript to the editor, be sure to check all the submission rules on our website and make sure you have complied with them.<\/p>\n

2. After sending your manuscript to your editor<\/strong><\/span>\u2014Once your Project Manager sends your manuscript to the editor, do not keep working on a copy of the manuscript on your own.<\/p>\n

3. After receiving your manuscript back from the editor<\/strong>\u2014<\/span>Once you receive your manuscript back from the project manager, you will need to look at it in the REVIEW MODE<\/span><\/strong> of Microsoft Word. Please do not ACCEPT<\/strong> <\/span>or REJECT<\/strong> <\/span>any changes in the document. If you do, those changes disappear and your editor will not be able to properly reference what has been done or the progress that has been made. <\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, just read through your manuscript and if you see something you disagree with, state your concerns in a comment box that your editor can check, or you can list your suggested changes on a separate document and discuss them with the editor. <\/span><\/p>\n

If you have changes or additions you want to insert, then you can do so, but highlight them in yellow so it is very clear that new changes have been made. After you discuss the issues with your editor and conclusions have been reached, then your editor can resolve everything and finalize the document. <\/span>Be sure to respond to all <\/span>\"COMMENTS<\/span>\"<\/span><\/strong> made by the editor or editors before proceeding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If your manuscript has a lot of edits and is difficult to read as a result, you can switch from \"All Markup\" to \"No Markup\" and you can read the document without seeing the edits. Nothing is altered. You can go back to \"All Markup\" and see all edits that have been inserted.<\/span><\/p>\n
