God's Law Written on Our Heart

on Jul 1, 2012 | Mike |

Why did God write the 10 commandments in stone with His finger, but He allowed Moses to write the rest of the law? Could it be—because the 10 commandments are timeless? They never change. They are still relevant and important in the New Covenant. But some of Moses’ expansion of the law was eventually phased out. God only writes with His finger what is to be PERMANENT---and most wonderful of all, He has written His law IN OUR HEARTS as part of our spiritual rebirth. So He must intend it to be a PERMANENT WORK!

Two passages out of Proverbs enhance this revelation.

Proverbs 3:3-4 Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man.

Proverbs 7:2-3 Keep My commands and live, and My law as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.

In the Old Covenant, so much hinged on human effort. In other words, God is saying to the Israelite people. YOU make a decision to live righteous lives and YOU subject your own human heart, by YOUR own will power, to walk according to the law. YOU write the law on your own heart. It didn't work. Very few were strong enough. Very few were consistent in their commitment. But then God promised a New Covenant when He would supernaturally intervene, and transform our character. He said in Jeremiah 31:33, "I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people." No wonder the Bible calls this covenant a "better covenant...established on better promises" (Hebrews 8:6)
